It’s Your First Day – Here’s How You Fit In

Your first day on the job can be a nerve-wracking experience, and you need to do everything you can to be flexible and open to learning your new role. It’s easy to get sidetracked or overwhelmed by all the new connections and the new work environment, but you can take steps to make the transition much smoother. Even if you are not a social person, the first day is the day you need to break out of your shell and connect with people so that you are a natural fit.

Here are some important things to remember your first day on the job.

Don’t Be Late

One of the worst impressions you can make on your first day is being late. Take extra time to get ready in the morning and plan to get to your work site at least 15 minutes before your start time. Lay out your clothes the night before, so you aren’t scrambling to create a professional look at the last minute.

Be Polite and Courteous

Take the time to introduce yourself to everyone and be polite and courteous to everybody you meet. Since you won’t know who plays what role in the organization right off the bat, it’s best not to be too casual or appear unprofessional — especially if you end up meeting supervisors.

Be Prepared to Ask Questions

Asking questions is a good way to show interest and get answers to some things that may not be clear to you. Everyone knows you are just learning the new job, so don’t be shy about stepping up and asking for help or clarification on anything.

Don’t Talk About Your Old Job

Avoid mentioning anything about your old boss, former co-workers and how things were done at the old company you worked for. You need to show you are fully invested in this new job and aren’t walking in to change things — yet. Take the time to learn how things are done at this company and how everybody interacts, so you don’t overstep your boundaries and make a poor impression.
