Have the Right Plan on the Morning of Your Job Interview

As the morning of your big job interview approaches, you may be getting a bit nervous. This is to be expected because everything hinges on you making a positive impression and getting a job offer. In order to get yourself into the right mindset for the job interview, here are some things you can do to have a great plan for the morning of your job interview.

Bring Resumes and References

Days before the interview, put together a folder that includes extraresumes, your references, and a few business cards. Have some talking points to bring up during awkward pauses and you will feel prepared for the initial meeting. Have the clothes you are wearing to the interview ready to go and neatly pressed. Are your shoes polished?

Re-read the Job Description and Review the Company Website

The night before the interview, re-read the job description and review the company website one more time. You’ll have a better idea of what the job entails and you can think of how your skills and experience match the job. Prepare for a behavioral based interview by being able to give example of various situations, the actions you took, and the results you achieved, especially as it pertains to the position you are interviewing for the next day. Consider anything the company is known for and current events in the industry to talk about too. Google the Company+Awards to find any awards the company has that you can talk about during the interview. The additional research helps to show how you took extra steps to learn more about the company and shows your interest in the opportunity.

Stay Confident and Focused

Before you allow your palms to get sweaty and your pulse to race, do your best to remain cool, calm, and confident. Give yourself plenty of time to get dressed and groomed. Leave the heavy cologne or perfume at home. Have the car gassed up and know your route to the interview site. Often candidates do a trial run prior to the interview to make sure they know the way. Then look in the mirror and say, “You can do this!” to yourself before walking out the door.

Practice Tough Interview Questions

On the way to the interview, listen to some calming music and practice how you will greet the recruiter, shake his hand (strong and confident), and how you will answer the toughest interview questions. If you need a list of interview questions that you should be prepared to answer, please email us. It may seem a bit rehearsed, but it will help prepare you mentally for what’s to come today. Once there, be polite to everyone you meet.
