Will AI Create More Jobs Than It’s Replacing in 2020?

According to Gartner Inc.’s 2017 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to automate 1.8 million people out of work by 2020. Taken at face value, this statistic is alarming. However, when you dig deeper into the report, you find that Gartner also predicts AI will create 2.3 million jobs by 2020. If so, the net gain will be 500,000 jobs created. Here a few reasons why AI will create more jobs than it’s replacing in 2020.

AI Requires New Skillsets

With the rise of AI comes the need for developing new skillsets. For this reason, many organizations are looking for employees willing to participate in on-the-job training and reskilling. For instance, companies have ongoing opportunities for professionals to determine the best type of AI, such as expert systems or machine learning, to use for a specific application, develop and train the models, and maintain and retrain systems. There’s a need for AI trainers who support data science and capabilities related to modeling, computational intelligence, machine learning, math, psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience. Universities need professors and students to teach and study security and machine learning to produce more experts for future jobs.

AI Cannot Replace Human Judgment and Relations

Two advantages that humans have over AI are that they can provide judgment and manage interpersonal relations. As a result, jobs that require creation, conceptualization or complex strategic planning management need humans to fill them. For instance, managers are needed to use data to make better business decisions. Leaders are needed to deal with the nuances of problems. Sales managers require emotional intelligence to reach their monthly quotas, network and collaborate with customers and motivate their team. Marketing managers have to interpret data, monitor trends, oversee campaigns, create content, and respond to feedback from the company and customers. As AI-based language translation empowers companies to do more business overseas, more human translators are needed to help with nuanced conversations.

Employees Can Take on Additional Responsibilities

As a result of AI taking over low-level tasks, employees can transition by assuming higher-level tasks. For instance, they can request to work on projects that develop management and leadership skills. If a company offers professional development, staff can participate in courses to develop creative skills like public speaking, writing, or graphic design. This way, employees can transition into other roles that are valuable to an organization.
